You might know Zach Williams from his songs “Chain Breaker” and “Old Church Choir.” His new song, “Fear is a Liar” is the perfect anthem for this series!

Read (from the New Living Translation)

1 John 4:18

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.

Go Deep

“The devil has a way of getting in your head and messing with your faith.” Zach Williams shares his own run-in with crippling fear. Now, he’s writing songs, speaking out against fear, and encouraging others to walk in faith. So, how did he move from fear to faith? Watch today’s video to find out!

Watch the powerful video to Zach’s song called, “Fear is a Liar.”

Notes from the Life Application Study Bible

If we ever are afraid of the future, eternity, or God’s judgement, we can remind ourselves of God’s love. We know that he loves us perfectly (Romans 8:38, 39). We can resolve our fears first by focusing on his immeasurable love for us, and then by allowing him to love others through us. His love will quit your fears and give you confidence.

Amazing! I’m so grateful for this study of fear. I get it now!! Fear shifts our focus on our life. Believe God is always moving in our lives. We all have to face fear. It’s what fear sees IN us when it SEES us.

I like your statement that fear shifts our focus. This is so true and we need to be able o recognize this.

I don’t know about you, Holly, but I’m praying to shift into higher gear for His glory & my victory! 🙂

I can connect to the fact that God is constantly moving in our lives, but I struggle with God’ love. How do you move from it just being words to belief? I’ve read and can quote scripture about His love, however I don’t know how to transfer that to my believing. HIS movement is visual and at times things transpire in your life that you know undeniably that it is God.How do I jump the broom so to speak?

I realize I am repeating my comment however I’m not sure if you see my response to Melanie I am 53 years old now and I became a Christian when I was 23. I struggled for 20 years with this issue. I was absolutely miserable inside. If I were to be perfectly truthful, I would say that I excepted Christ and that was personal but not too long afterwards it turned into me under some sort of a blanket, Christ loves all the world statement and I’m lumped in the masses. It was not personal. I was not receiving His… Read more »

Hi Melanie, I understand what you are saying and we need to recognize his hand on our lives. Like the time you needed something and someone was there to provide it or that awful thing you went through and you are now out of. He is the one who provides for us not with trumpets blasting but in that neighbor or that stranger. I look back on the time many years ago when I lost my son. I didn’t know how I was going to make it through. I raven hollared at God for taking him from me. But God… Read more »

You need to ask God to show you the times he has shown you love and comforted you in one way or another and you will be surprised what you find. He has loved you this whole time and I understand feeling lost in the crowd in a sense but he has shown you specifically love and once you see it, it will be easier to believe.

There are two types of faith…knowing about God and feeling God speak to you and hearing the message He has particularly for you. In order for that second one to happen you have to open your heart to God. It may not be happening because you have fear in believing but not in pronouncing. Two things you can do. Follow your heart as you spend time daily with God and don’t clutter up your time in that place. Give time for silence for that is when God speaks to you as a friend would and pray that God will hear… Read more »

Oh, Melanie, I know how you feel. For years I felt like a shallow Christian. I had the Biblical knowledge of God’s love but I struggled to connect it personally. I realize now that it was because i felt too unworthy to be loved. I have finally allowed myself to believe that, in spite of my unworthiness, He has deemed me worthy. I still struggle but it’s getting easier. I’m a very closed person & I struggle with opening myself up, even to God, who knows the number of hairs on my head. You words hit me,it was as if I spoke them. I Love God,I know he works for good in our lives. I believe, but in really, really, hard times I allow Satan to put fear in my heart and doubt in my trust. I want to move past the fear, and gain the ability to stop Satan’s lies with God’s words. Thanks for sharing !

What a beautiful song, what beautiful words to those that fear has conquered them… may His Holy Spirit be so ever present in our lives, may His strength cast out all fears… except, the fear of the Lord.

Yes, Ozzie, that is THE fear which makes all the other fears look less significant! Thanks for that insight.

What a wonderful study. I think about how Jesus told the woman who washed his feet with her tears that her many sins are forgiven because of her faith and to go in peace. God has forgivien my many sins and I can be in peace not fear.

I see more and more that fear is robing people around me , my loved ones and myself of the blessings of God. I absolutely Love this song and listen to it at times of my need to focus on the truth. How simple… but how powerful the words… Fear is a liar! It has become second nature to me, as someone shares the fear gripping them, to say out loud to them… Fear is a liar! Thank You Lord,

And thank you, Doris, for sharing God’s Truth with so many. We truly are to encourage one another to see the Lord more & more.

At the beginning, Wally asked on the radio what our biggest fear was? I thought of some examples involving being forgotten or losing my family. But the one time I was truly terrified was when I became pregnant as a single woman. I was in college at the time and still healing from recent tragedies. But when I found out that big news of being pregnant, I was scared to share it with my friends, my family. I let everyone down. I turned to God, and not only did the Father show me his love, but he gave me peace… Read more »

JoAnna my heart breaks for you and the circumstances you are facing. In respect for your privacy I’m not going to ask details, but will rather pray for you; praying God’s peace and provision in your life. God has promised he will NEVER leave us and he hasn’t broken his promise yet. But, sometimes the circumstances blur and tint our vision to where we can’t see Him. When we seems to be flying blind is when we need to trust and faith the most. Sweet sister you will be prayed for by many of your Christian siblings.

Wonderful song, devotional, and series! Probably the fear I struggle with the most is a fear of failure, that I’ll never be able to do anything good with my life and everyone I care about will be ashamed of me for it. Praise God, though, that fear is indeed a liar! God’s truth and love can always sustain me and guide me towards His plans for me!

WAY-FM

Remember that God loves you more than you love yourself (& your disappointments). You will find plenty of failure in many of the people in the Bible, but they teach us that the closer we stay to God, the more failure becomes a distant possibility. Christ’s redemption casts failure & shame from us.

WAY-FM

It really makes the words even more powerful, doesn’t it?

Part of my struggle with fear is because I don’t think God loves me unconditionally. I think He is mad at me for messing up or for not obeying Him. Therefore He won’t answer my prayers for His help when I am needing it. The scripture verse for today, 1 John 4:18, and the notes from the Life Application Bible has really spoken to me this morning! And I love Zach Williams song and video. I will meditate on all of this today and hopefully it will sink in deep!

You’re not alone in feeling this way. We live in a culture where favor is given to those who obey the rules, but that is not God’s way of loving us. The book Comforts from the Cross does a good job of explaining God’s deep, deep unchanging love for us. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love because he first loved us” and 1 John 4:10 tells us, “This is love: not that we loved God, but the he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” God has already chosen to love us, it’s not… Read more »

Struggling with the idea that God CAN come sweep in and save the day as it were. He can heal the sick, mend the brokenhearted, provide where there seems no other way, BUT the lie that i struggle with is He will provide for everyone else but you, You have messed up too many times, have not been who you should God loves others, but He cant love you however. This feeling leads to great fear which in turn leads to incapacitation and feeling like a deer in the headlights. My head knows truth, but sometimes my heart struggles to… Read more »

When I listen to those lies, I get back into one of the Gospels & listen closely to Jesus. I won’t ever understand the extent of His grace while on this earth, but I will believe it & hold on to it whatever my heart or others might say differently. I pray you know that struggles don’t mean that God doesn’t love you, but that God wants you close to Him. I have learned that recently by reading the Psalms. It’s all about God and what He’s done (& doing) and not about me.

Awesome study on fear. I’m thankfull God doesn’t give up on us like others around us do. If we are honest we all struggle with fear and satan uses that to keep us helpless. God’s love truly is greater than fear or anything satan can throw at us.I’m thankful God’s love for us never changes because of what we’ve done. He loves us regardless. Jesus paid the price. Fear shifts our focus on the what ifs, not the Truth. The Truth is Jesus Christ. God will never leave us or forsake us. We need to keep our eyes focused on our eternal life.
