It’s hard to talk about fear and not think about the tragedies we see on the news every day. We’ve all had those moments when we think, “That could happen to anyone… Even me.” Let’s talk about keeping that fear from controlling our minds and what truths God gives us to think on instead.
Read (from the New Living Translation)
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Go Deep
When walking into a football stadium just days after a tragic shooting, Justin Paul (from WAY-FM) was reminded of something his mother used to tell him. It was surprisingly relevant to every adult struggling with fear.
Notes from the Life Application Study Bible
Paul [author of 2 Timothy] mentions three characteristics of the effective Christian leader: power, love, and self-discipline. These are available to us because the Holy Spirit lives in us. Follow his leading each day so that your life will more fully exhibit these characteristics. See Galatians 5:22, 23 for a list of the by-products of the Holy Spirit living in us.

Was just reading Joshua and how he was to take on all the Canaanite tribes, giants…God told him do not fear . I will be with you. It was amazing reading about the surprise tactics He gave Joshua to use and even sending hail stones on the enemy . God has our back IF we are in His will and His way .
I love that scripture says that He will NEVER leave us or forsake us!
Currently my fears after surgery is just getting around. Showers are an assisted thing and that is fearful. The thought of falling is so great then. Sad to say such a small thing is scary. So glad this is going on now. It helps so much. Thank you
So glad that this is encouraging you and helping you with your fear. I love seeing how God always has us covered!
I understand what you’re going through.
I have Muscular Dystrophy, which is a disease that takes away the ability for your body to make new muscles. Because of this disease I can’t walk or stand, and my arms are pretty weak, so I require assistance with many things.I know it sounds silly to be scared of something so small, but I also have a fear of falling.
What did Wally call the fear of falling? I think it was basophobia?
These reminders are so good. Thank you!
I am still having panic attacks. But I keep on praying,
Panic attacks are awful, so glad you are still praying and leaning on God. On Monday, Jasmine Murray gives some really practical hints on panic attacks.
Have you had them?
I have loved ones who suffer from them and know how they affect their lives. Jasmine Murray has suffered some and will be talking about some things that have helped her in those moments, on Monday.
I have them too along with awful anxiety. I pray all the time to show me how to lift this from my life. Prayer works. I can be driving in my car, even at the grocery store … if I feel it I start praying. It also helps to be around people that understand how it feels. Stay strong because you can beat it.
This is definitely my go to verse when I am afraid and I memorized it to get me past those fearful moments! Works every time. I might have to repeat several times, but it gets me through it.
This is such a good verse to stand on in those tough moments.
I know that feeling of being fearful after a shooting. The aurora theater shooting really made me fearful to go to a theater for a long time. My daughter lost a friend and it scared me to think she was supposed to be there. It took me a few years to come to terms that, that was not God but evil that did that. So I am no longer fearful to go and do what I love and that’s seeing movies. Than you
Wow, that is really scary. I am so glad your daughter was not there and that you are able to get back to doing something you love! Satan loves to steal our joy, so I am happy to hear you are walking in joy instead of fear!
I am walking thru a 2nd divorce at 58 years of age. For the past 2 months I have struggled with fear in relation to my financial future. I work part-time and had plans to retire this year. Now I have to increase my hours and pick up medical insurance. Not to mention find a new home that I can afford and feel safe in. Can you say fear with a big “F”? This study has met me right where I am. I thank God for the “coincidences” in our lives.
Pam: I understand what you are feeling because I too have been there at age 62. One other thing I do know is that God will get you through if you rest on His promises. I will lift you up in prayer. Best of luck.
Amen! For several years I did volunteer work at my county jail through the chaplain’s office. Every time, there was at least a couple of inmates coming up to me and asking for prayer concerning their fears. This verse was the first words out of my mouth. Those who knew God, showed enlightened peace, others, it stirred to go deeper into the free Bible they were given. Wonderful Words of Life! Thank You Lord!
Love this! Such amazing truth to be passing on to them!
THIS is what I need! I quote that verse, but struggle how to live it out in those fearful situations. I think I have a sound mind in these situations. I have God’s love. How do I have power when someone could physically hurt or kil me because they are physically more powerful than me?
I needed to hear this, I am currently leaving a job and taken another one and loosing a great deal of money. I have much fear, but I have prayed about a change and this is what I believe God has in store for me.
That can be a very scary place to be in, Cj is going to talk a little bit more about that on Tuesday. So glad to hear you can walk in Gods peace and know that he has the best plans for our lives.
Oh my gosh, I have similar feelings also. My son is at college also let’s pray together that they will both be ok – from Michelle in Washington State
Sandra, praying that God will heal you from the trauma. I am so sorry for the injustice you have endured. Praise God that you are here and seeking Him— he sees you, sister and you are not alone. 💛
Aah yes the sound mind part! My fears do indeed “scramble” my thoughts and often that internal confusion causes problems with my focus on FatherGod,
Thank you for refreshing us with that simple but oh so powerful verse!
So true! Love this verse and the truth it reminds us of!
Thank you so much, Justin Paul! My husband is going through a lot right now ( and so is my daughter) and it ALL centers around fear! I am going to show both of them your video! Thank you for sharing God’s truth with me!
So glad to hear this was encouraging to you and hopefully is able to encourage your husband and daughter as well.
Saw this in a daily devotion from Max Lucado yesterday – “Fear triggers either despair or prayer. Choose wisely.”
Wow, that is some good truth! Thanks for sharing that with us!
Love that 2 Timothy verse! Going to be quoting that to my little one when she gets fearful
I am loving this series on fear. I live with clinical depression and anxiety. My favorite bible verse is Isaiah 41:10 which Wally did on day one. Thank you Justin! I love the way you broke this verse down. I won’t look at it the same way again 💜💜💜
God gives us power, love and self control. All these gifts protect us from fear.
Life may be different in a month or two. I am in a fearful situation when I’m fact everything Financial might be taken care of, and I want to work! I’m scared of the future. I have dreams and ambitions but what if those dreams are taken away again? I am going to go to a pastor to discuss my fear. It’s the only answer i have right now. I may have to pay up so to speak for my sins. I don’t know what to do.
Praying right now for you to be courageous Kathy. God already knows the good plans he has for you— plans to prosper, not to harm you. (Jeremiah 29:11) you can trust him to never leave you alone, no matter what consequences you might be facing.
I needed to hear this today. Amen
Yay! So happy that this encouraged you today!
Praise God that He gives us so many great scripture verses and a great group of Believers to present themselves in a very up front way to present this study to us. Thank You Way FM. Past experiences have left me fearful of many things and I’m glad I’m able to gather tools to help me fight off satan the liar.
That is exactly what we were hoping for with this study! It is so important to have scriptures we can go to instantly when satan is telling us lies.
2 Timothy 1:7 is one of the verses I have memorized, but today’s message helped me see it in a new light. When I watch the news and hear of the bad things going on in the world, it does make me fearful and discouraged. Now, I think I will say 2 Timothy 1:7 as a prayer to help me through my fears.
I love when God gives us new insight into a verse we already love! So cool! I am so glad you were encouraged!
I am currently going thru a situation that has me anxious and fearful. But in my devotions today God led me to verses 1 Peter 5:7, Joshua 1:9, which helps me know He is right beside me and nothing is too hard for Him!
Those are such great truths to remember in the midst of tough situations! Thank you so much for sharing those with us all!
Fear = FALSE-EVIDENCE-APPEARING-REAL
Wow, Megan, that is such a tough place to be. Thank you for being so vulnerable with what is going on in your life. I will be praying for you. Remember that God never leaves us or forsakes us, so he is walking with you through all of this, you can be confident in that! I would also encourage you to share your story on the WAY-FM Prayer Wall. That will give even more people an opportunity to stand with you in prayer. Here is the link to the Prayer Wall: http://www.wayfm.com/prayer/
Praying for you, Megan. For the Lord to lead you into making the right and best decisions for you and your daughter. For the Lord to reach your husband and meet his spiritual needs and to come home to you. To restore your marriage in such a wonderful way and for this situation to be a mere stepping stone once this “long path” meets back to the His “main road” that He has already traced out for your family. In Christ’s love. AFC
Thank you for this! The message is strong and God’s timing never ceases to amaze.
